Guitar Basic Lesson Using a Pick
Holding a pick might seem simple, but doing it correctly is the secret to clear notes and fast strumming. If you hold it too tight, your hand will cramp; too loose, and it will fly across the room!
3 Steps to the Perfect Grip
- The "OK" Sign: Curl your index finger toward your palm.
- The Placement: Place the pick on the side of your index finger, pointing toward your guitar strings.
- The Lock: Place your thumb on top of the pick. You should only see about 1/4 inch of the pointy tip sticking out.
Strumming Basics for Beginners
- Keep a Loose Wrist: Don't move your whole arm; use your wrist like you're shaking water off your hand.
- Angle the Pick: Don't hit the strings flat. Tilt the pick slightly downward for a smoother "glide" across the strings.
- The "Tick-Tock" Motion: Practice moving down on the "beat" (1, 2, 3, 4) and up on the "and" (1 & 2 & 3 & 4).
Pro Tip: For acoustic guitars, try a Medium (0.71mm) pick. It’s flexible enough for strumming but stiff enough for single notes!

One question many people have when they begin learning the guitar is “What kind of pick should I use?” The answer is simple. Use whatever feels comfortable for you. Some people use thick picks.
In my opinion, it is necessary to learn how to play with a pick in order to achieve the many sounds capable on the guitar.
