Guitar Basic Lesson Using a Pick Holding a pick might seem simple, but doing it correctly is the secret to clear notes and fast strumming. If you hold it too tight, your hand will cramp; too loose, and it will fly across the room! 3 Steps to the Perfect Grip The "OK" Sign: Curl your index finger toward your palm. The Placement: Place the pick on the side of your index finger, pointing toward your guitar strings. The Lock: Place your thumb on top of the pick. You should only see about 1/4 inch of the pointy tip sticking out.
